Water Heater Failure

Water heaters have a shelf life. The current thought is that they will last for up to 10 years.   Even if your water heater is not giving you a problem, the current thought is to replace them every 10 years.  You might want to use a black magic marker and write the installation date right on the water heater.  That way you will know when it is time to replace it.  If your budget allows, you might want to consider a tankless water heater which can last as many as 20 years.

If you are not sure how to find out how old your water heater is, you can look up the serial number on the manufacturer’s sticker near the top of the water heater. But age isn’t the only thing that can cause a water heater to malfunction.  You should inspect it regularly to check for signs of moisture build-up, mold or corrosion.  If your water isn’t as hot as it used to be or if there’s rust coming from your faucets you should call your trusted plumber.  It is much cheaper to maintain your water heater than to have to deal with a water loss.
