Opening a water line after a cold winter

It looks like spring has finally arrived in Wisconsin. It is time to go down to the basement and open up the valves in the water lines going to the outside spigots. If water was trapped between the valve and the spigot during the freezing temperatures that we experienced this past winter, it could have caused the water to freeze and create cracks in the water line.
We suggest that you inspect the water line before opening the valve. Then open up the valve and wait a few minutes to see if there are any leaks in the line. At this time of the year we receive calls from customers who opened the valve and immediately went upstairs. Hours or days later they discover their basements are flooded causing extensive damage. SERVPRO of Ozaukee County can dry out and restore the basement “like it never even happened.” However, it is less costly and less stressful, to find and stop any water leaks as soon as possible and definitely before they flood your basement.
